Spring, cable or opener? Here is how to tell
A garage door is counterbalanced by its springs. The opener only guides it. So when a door stops moving, the first question is whether the springs are still doing their job, and the symptom usually answers it.
| What you notice | Usually | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Loud bang, then the door will not lift | Torsion spring broke (look for a gap in the coil) | Spring replacement |
| Door crooked, one side higher, cable hanging | Lift cable snapped or jumped the drum | Cable and drum replacement |
| Rollers out of the track, door jammed | Bent track, worn rollers or a car bump | Off-track repair |
| Opener runs, door stays put | Stripped drive gear or disconnected trolley | Opener repair |
| Door reverses before it closes, light blinks | Safety sensors misaligned or blocked | Sensor repair |
| Grinding, squealing, shaking | Worn steel rollers, dry hinges, loose hardware | Rollers and hinges or a tune-up |
Whatever it is, do not touch the springs, cables, drums or bottom brackets, and do not run the opener on a door with a broken spring. Browse every symptom or read the two-minute checklist.
How it works
-
Tell us what the door is doing
Call, text or send the form with your address, single or double door, and a photo of the door from inside the garage.
-
Get one firm price
We quote the whole job from the photo and the posted rates. With a repair there is no trip fee, and nobody sells you a new door in the driveway.
-
We come to you, same day in most cases
The truck carries torsion and extension springs in the common sizes, cables, drums, rollers, hinges, sensors, remotes and belt-drive openers.
-
Run the door yourself
You open and close it, by hand and by opener, before we pack up. You pay when it runs right, and the work is guaranteed.
What happens when you call
The person who fixes the door answers, asks what it is doing and your city, asks for a photo, then gives you one total and a time.
LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Clopay, Amarr and the old one-piece doors
Every opener has its own gear kit, trolley and remote generation, and a 1960s one-piece tilt-up takes different springs than a 2005 steel sectional. We carry the common parts and know which is which from a photo. We are an independent repair company, not affiliated with any manufacturer.
More ways we help

Small on purpose
We repair the door you have. Every job stays under $1,000 in labor and materials, so we do not sell doors or pull permits. When a door needs more, we tell you and refer it to a licensed contractor.
We are not a licensed contractor. Garage door repairs under $1,000 in labor and materials do not require a California contractor license (Business and Professions Code section 7048), and we stay inside that line. A new garage door is a job for a licensed contractor, and we say so.

Questions we answer every day
How do I avoid a garage door repair scam?
Get the all-in total for your door in writing before anyone drives out, parts and labor included. A cheap service call that turns into a big number in the driveway, pressure to replace the whole door over one broken spring, and parts sold as never wearing out are the usual signs. Our prices are posted, texted to you first, and the same in the driveway.
What does garage door repair cost in San Diego?
With Spring & Cable a single torsion spring starts at $229 and a pair at $329, parts and labor, door balanced. Lift cables start at $159, an off-track reset at $189, opener repair at $139 and a new belt-drive opener with battery backup at $549 installed. The full list is on the pricing page and every price is agreed before the visit.
Can you come out today?
In most cases, yes. A broken spring or a door stuck open is the kind of call we move first, and the common springs, cables and opener parts ride on the truck. Call or text with your city and a photo and we give you a window the same day when one is open, or the first slot the next morning.
How long do most garage door repairs take?
A pair of torsion springs takes 45 minutes to an hour, and cables, rollers and an off-track reset sit in the same range when nothing else is bent. Opener repairs vary with the part, and a new opener installed and programmed takes a few hours. We give you the time with the price before we drive out, and most jobs finish in one visit because the common parts ride on the truck.
Which areas do you cover?
The places on our service areas page, from Oceanside and Carlsbad down to Chula Vista and Imperial Beach and out to Santee, Lakeside and Poway, plus the rest of the urban county by arrangement. Send your city or ZIP with the photo and we confirm the window with the price.
Can I get the price by text before you come out?
Yes. Text a photo of the door from inside the garage and one of the springs above it, with your city, and we reply with the posted total and a time. The number you get by text is the number you pay, unless the door turns out to be oversized, custom wood or commercial, and we tell you that before we drive out.
